PSC I – Peer Specialist (PT, AM)


Job Description:

Program Information: SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA – MENTAL HEALTH COLLABORATIVE COURT (MHCC): Opened in July 2015, San Diego MHCC was created to support individuals who are incarcerated to successfully re-enter their community. Assessment begins while the individual is still in jail, and services start as soon as they are released. Individuals must commit to the full 18 months in order to participate in the program, regardless of how many months they have left to serve in jail. The primary focus of the program is to ensure members are set up with the proper resources and tools they will need to move forward without re-offending. This program sees up to 30 individuals. POSITION OBJECTIVEThe PSC I/Peer Support Specialist provides both direct and indirect support services to members both on a group and individual basis. The PSC I/Peer Support Specialist provides these services using Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Recovery principles. Will develop and work directly with consumers in developing peer and community supports. Will also provide consumer assertiveness and advocacy training, act as role model, and assist consumers in accessing community resources. Provides education and support to members and their families. QUALIFICATIONS This qualified individual must be a mental health consumer, have been functionally disabled as the result of psychiatric illness at some point in his/her life for at least a three-month period (please specify on resume or cover letter). Individuals with criminal justice histories preferred. Must have knowledge of County community resources and public transportation. Possession of a valid driver’s license and automobile is preferred. Must have knowledge of the process of mental illness and understand the needs of those with serious mental illness. Experience with self-help consumer movement. Completion of or current enrollment in Peer Training/Certification course is required. High school diploma or equivalent. Fluency in Spanish, Arabic, Tagalog, or Vietnamese preferred.
